A Million Dollar Lesson by Petey Parker

A cab driver taught me a million dollar lesson in customer satisfaction and expectation. Motivational speakers charge thousands of dollars to impart his kind of training to corporate executives. It cost me a $12 taxi ride.

I had flown into Dallas for the sole purpose of calling on a client. Time was of the essence and my plan included a quick turnaround trip from and back to the airport. A spotless cab pulled up.

The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed the door. As he got in the driver’s seat, he mentioned that the neatly folded Wall Street Journal next to me for my use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy.

Well! I looked around for a "e;Candid Camera!"e; Wouldn’t you? I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say, "e;Obviously you take great pride in your work. You must have a story to tell."e;

"e;You bet,"e; he replied, "e;I used to be in Corporate America. But I got tired of thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my niche in life where I could feel proud of being the best I could be.

I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, being of service and feeling like I have done a full day’s work and done it well. I evaluate my personal assets and… wham! I became a cab driver.

One thing I know for sure, to be good in my business I could simply just meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be GREAT in my business, I have to EXCEED the customer’s expectations! I like both the sound and the return of being ‘great’ better than just getting by on ‘average’"e;

Did I tip him big time? You bet! Corporate America’s loss is the traveling folk’s friend!

“No Bones About It”

Oscar Pistorius had his legs surgically removed at the young age of 11 months because he was born without the fibula in both legs. Since then the 21 year old has been working relentlessly to fulfill his dream of competing in the Olympics. However, that goal has been blocked by a solid barricade of irony.

The irony is Oscar has been banned from Olympic competition. Not because he is slower or a danger to the other runners but because he’s too fast. Pistorius runs from the aid of fake legs called Cheetah Flex Foot prosthetics. The state–of–the–art false limbs were made too efficient.

Research conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) found Pistorius can run at the same speed as other able bodied runners. There’s no doubting that. However, the study showed the Olympic hopeful creates the same speed using about ¼ less energy as the next guy. Pistorius was banned from the Summer Olympics giving him yet another proverbial hurdle to jump.

In the report, it stated Oscar had an “unfair advantage.” Whether or not Oscar does in fact have an inequitable benefit doesn’t mean we can’t take away a special lesson here. We can all look up to what Oscar Pistorius has done with his life.

Here is someone that has never lived life with the ability of legs or feet. He wasn’t able to get up and go to the fridge or the bathroom. There was no chance of playing baseball or basketball as a kid. So what did he do? He stayed positive and persistent. He didn’t make excuses, he made answers.

The lesson is this:

Oscar Pistorius may never run in the Olympics and the IAAF has made a great case as to why he shouldn’t. But that has never stopped Oscar from trying. He will never stop dreaming and he will never give in.

I suggest you do the same. When life gives you a hurdle. Jump It. If there are two. Jump them both. If miles of hurdles are standing in your way of success. Smile, because you’re jumping them with both feet.

The City of Tallahassee has agreed in contract to use the electricity produced from a future power plant to be built by Biomass Gas & Electric, LLC of Tallahassee. The plant will lower high utility costs in Tallahassee by incinerating woods chips which is less expensive than currently used natural gas. However, this cheaper energy comes at a steeper cost than money. A potential health risk.

Here are the pros and cons. You decide if it’s better to be financially sound or ecological and health conscious.

The plant can potentially:

Pros:

Produce up to 42 megawatts of power, enough to power 24,000 homes.
Cut electricity prices by 50% from 15.1 cents/kw-hr to 7 cents/kw-hr.
Remain energy independent of fossil fuels.
Lessen the pressure to continue to raise electricity rates as gas and oil prices rise.
Help recycle carbon stored in plants.
Research technology for new energy uses.

Cons:

Increase the amount of toxic carbon monoxide in the air.
Affect patients with respiratory and cardiac conditions.
Increase the incidence of respiratory conditions in children.
Emit dioxins, which have shown to be highly carcinogenic.
Recycle carbon. However, carbon is not the worst greenhouse gas present in the atmosphere. Methane is 21 times and nitrous oxide is 310 times more efficient at warming the Earth.

Yes or no? That is the question that will have to be answered. Will it help lower our high energy bills without harming residents? Or will the new plant damage the health of our residents?

Sectors to be revamped include education, government agencies, global warming, healthcare, the Internet and unemployment. His efforts are to make America a leader in internet technology once again.

One issue the CTO will influence will be to keep the Internet from being privatized. Many are concerned that the Internet will lose its freedom by media outlets providing fast service to certain users and giving the rest regulated, slower service. To combat this, Obama and the CTO will encourage diversity among media ownership and prohibit fees for content and certain Web site applications.

In order to compete in the global marketplace the CTO must improve the education infrastructure. This means bettering public schools’ access to information by replacing out-dated computers and increasing Internet speed to broadband. This will eventually lead to a higher number of science and education graduates which the United States is lacking compared to other leading nations.

The CTO will make accessing government data and voicing your opinion easier. People will now be able to reach important information faster and comment on local community conditions.

Obama foresees the CTO will answer one of America’s most significant problems. Healthcare. Making public health records available electronically could better communication and eventually save lives.

This in turn will help children develop quicker, cheapen healthcare, slow global warming and, the most important benefit, create jobs in a faltering economy. “THE STARTHROWER”

This story was inspired by the writing of Loren Eiseley. He was special because he combined the best of two worlds. He was a scientist and a poet. With the wisdom he gained from those two cultures, he wrote insightfully and beautifully about the world and our role in it.

Once upon a time there was a wise man, much like Eiseley himself who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man who wasn’t dancing at all, but instead reaching down to the shore, picking something up very gently and tossing it in the ocean.

As he got closer he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?”

The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish in the ocean.”

“I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?”

“The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in they’ll die.”

“But young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference.”

The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it in the sea, past the breaking waves. “It made a difference to that one.”

His response surprised the man. The older man was upset; He didn’t know how to reply. So instead, he turned and walked back to the cottage to begin his writings.

All day long as he wrote, the image of that young man haunted him. He tried to ignore it, but the vision persisted. Finally later in the afternoon he realized that he the scientist, he the poet had missed the essential nature of the young man’s actions. Because he realized that what the young man was doing, was choosing not to be an observer in the universe and watch it pass by, but was choosing to be an actor in the universe and make a difference. He was embarrassed.

That night he went to bed, troubled. When morning came he awoke knowing that he had to do something. So he got up, put his clothes on, went to the beach and found the young man. And with him he spent the rest of the morning throwing starfish in the ocean.

You see what the young man’s action represent is something that is special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can, like the young man, become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our vision the power to shape the future.
